RESUMO

Moon dust presents a significant hazard to manned moon exploration missions, yet our understanding of its toxicity remains limited. The objective of this study is to investigate the pattern and mechanism of lung inflammation induced by subacute exposure to moon dust simulants (MDS) in rats. SD rats were exposed to MDS and silica dioxide through oral and nasal inhalation for 6hours per day continuously for 15 days. Pathological analysis indicated that the toxicity of MDS was lower than that of silica dioxide. MDS led to a notable recruitment and infiltration of macrophages in the rat lungs. Material characterization and biochemical analysis revealed that SiO2, Fe2O3, and TiO2 could be crucial sources of MDS toxicity. The study revealed that MDS-induced oxidative stress response can lead to pulmonary inflammation, which potentially may progress to lung fibrosis. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that MDS suppresses the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway, triggers the Tnfr2 non-classical NF-kB pathway and IL-17 signaling pathway, ultimately causing lung inflammation and activating predominantly antioxidant immune responses. Moreover, the study identified the involvement of upregulated genes IL1b, csf2, and Sod2 in regulating immune responses in rat lungs, making them potential key targets for preventing pulmonary toxicity related to moon dust exposure. These findings are expected to aid in safeguarding astronauts against the hazardous effects of moon dust and offer fresh insights into the implications and mechanisms of moon dust toxicity.

RESUMO

Chemigenetic fusion of synthetic dyes with genetically encoded protein tags presents a promising avenue for in vivo imaging. However, its full potential has been hindered by the lack of bright and fluorogenic dyes operating in the "tissue transparency" near-infrared window (NIR, 700-1700 nm). Here, we report 2X-rhodamine (2XR), a novel bright scaffold that allows for the development of live-cell-compatible, NIR-excited variants with strong fluorogenicity beyond 1000 nm. 2XR utilizes a rigidified π-skeleton featuring dual atomic bridges and functions via a spiro-based fluorogenic mechanism. This design affords longer wavelengths, higher quantum yield (ΦF = 0.11), and enhanced fluorogenicity in water when compared to the phosphine oxide-cored, or sulfone-cored rhodamine, the NIR fluorogenic benchmarks currently used. We showcase their bright performance in video-rate dynamic imaging and targeted deep-tissue molecular imaging in vivo. Notably, we develop a 2XR variant, 2XR715-HTL, an NIR fluorogenic ligand for the HaloTag protein, enabling NIR genetically encoded calcium sensing and the first demonstration of in vivo chemigenetic labeling beyond 1000 nm. Our work expands the library of NIR fluorogenic tools, paving the way for in vivo imaging and sensing with the chemigenetic approach.

RESUMO

The misuse of aromatic amines like 4-chloroaniline (4-CA) has led to severe environmental and health issues. However, it's difficult to be utilized by microorganisms for degradation. Nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for the remediation of chloroaniline pollution, however, the synergistic effect and mechanism of nZVI with microorganisms for the degradation of 4-CA are still unclear. This study investigated the potential of 4-CA removal by the synergistic system involving nZVI and 4-CA degrading microbial flora. The results indicate that the addition of nZVI significantly enhanced the bio-degradation rate of 4-CA from 43.13 % to 62.26 %. Under conditions involving 0.1 % nZVI addition at a 24-hour interval, pH maintained at 7, and glucose as an external carbon source, the microbial biomass, antioxidant enzymes, and dehydrogenase were significantly increased, and the optimal 4-CA degradation rate achieved 68.79 %. Additionally, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of intermediates indicated that the addition of nZVI reduced compounds containing benzene rings and enhanced the dechlorination efficiency. The microbial community remained stable during the 4-CA degradation process. This study illustrates the potential of nZVI in co-microbial remediation of 4-CA compounds in the environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Shenfu injection was derived from the classical Chinese medicine formula 'Shenfu decoction', which was widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: Predict the main active ingredients, core targets, and related signaling pathways of Shenfu injection in the treatment of ischemic stroke. METHODS: Databases were used to collect the active ingredients and target information of Shenfu injection; GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were performed using the David database. The effects of Shenfu injection on core targets were verified using molecular docking and in vivo experiments. RESULTS: The predicted results identified 44 active ingredients and 635 targets in Shenfu injection, among which 418 targets, including TNF, IL-6, MAPK1, and MAPK14, were potential targets for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Molecular docking revealed that the active ingredients had good binding to IL-6, MAPK1, and MAPK14. In vivo experiments demonstrated that Shenfu injection significantly improved the pathological damage due to ischemic stroke, promoted the expression of tight junction proteins, and inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 expressions, thereby reducing BBB permeability. Animal experiments revealed that Shenfu injection could inhibit p38、JNK and ERK phosphorylation. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanism of Shenfu injection in treating ischemic stroke may be via inhibition of the inflammatory factors levels and protecting the BBB, thereby warranting subsequent studies and highlighting its potential as a reference for new drug development.

RESUMO

With the wide applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart home systems, IEEE 802.11n Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have become a frequently chosen communication technology due to their adaptability and affordability. In a high-density network of devices such as the smart home scenerio, a host often meets interferences from other devices and unequal Received Signal Strength (RSS) from Access Points (APs). This results in throughput unfairness/insufficiency problems between hosts communicating concurrently in WLAN. Previously, we have studied the throughput request satisfaction method to address this problem. It calculates the target throughput from measured single and concurrent throughputs of hosts and controls the actual throughput at this target one by applying traffic shaping at the AP. However, the insufficiency problem of maximizing the throughput is not solved due to interferences from other hosts. In this paper, we present an extension of the throughput request satisfaction method to maximize the throughput of a high-priority host under concurrent communications. It recalculates the target throughput to increase the actual throughput as much as possible while the other hosts satisfy the least throughput. For evaluations, we conduct experiments using the test-bed system with Raspberry Pi as the AP devices in several topologies in indoor environments. The results confirm the effectiveness of our proposal.

RESUMO

The plant-specific NAC gene family is one of the largest transcription factor families, participating in plant growth regulation and stress response. Despite extensive characterization in various plants, our knowledge of the NAC family in oat is lacking. Herein, we identified 333 NAC genes from the latest release of the common oat genome. We provide a comprehensive overview of the oat NAC gene family, covering gene structure, chromosomal localization, phylogenetic characteristics, conserved motif compositions, and gene duplications. AsNAC gene expression in different tissues and the response to various abiotic stresses were characterized using RT-qPCR. The main driver of oat NAC gene family expansion was identified as segmental duplication using collinearity analysis. In addition, the functions of AsNAC109 in regulating abiotic stress tolerance in Arabidopsis were clarified. This is the first genome-wide investigation of the NAC gene family in cultivated oat, which provided a unique resource for subsequent research to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for oat stress tolerance and provides valuable clues for the improvement of stress resistance in cultivated oat.

RESUMO

Objectives: This clinical trial primarily aimed to investigate the effects of blonanserin on social functioning in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. Methods: In this prospective, multi-centre, single-arm clinical trial study, blonanserin (flexible oral dose ranging from 8mg to 24mg per day) was given 26 weeks. Outcome measures included the Personal and Social Performance (PSP) scale for evaluating social functioning, the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) for measuring neurocognitive performance, and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) for assessing symptom severity. The primary endpoint was social function improvement evaluated by PSP scale at the end of blonanserin treatment. And the secondary endpoint was to validate the efficacy and neurocognitive effects of blonanserin. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were also recorded and analysed. Results: A total of 96 patients with first-episode schizophrenia were recruited and proceeded to analysis. Fifty-one participants (53.1%) completed the PSP scale measurements at baseline and week 26. Following 26 weeks of blonanserin treatment, all outcome measurements demonstrated significant improvement during the follow-up period. Notably, PSP scores exhibited a continuous increase up to 68.1% ± 103.7% at the end of the treatment (46.6 ± 14.6 at baseline, 69.4 ± 17.4 at week 26, p<0.001), indicating positive effects on social functioning that were already noticeable by week 8. Conclusion: Blonanserin treatment exhibited favourable effects on social functioning in individuals with first-episode schizophrenia. The results suggest that blonanserin was effective treatment options for patients with schizophrenia encountering functional impairments.

RESUMO

Solid acid catalysts are widely used in the field of biomass catalytic conversion owing to their advantages of low environmental pollution, easy separation and reusability. Nevertheless, there are relatively few studies on the mechanism of solid acid liquefaction for biomass. In this study, the effect of acid strength and acid amount of various solid acids on the liquefaction efficiency has been investigated using waste bamboo sawdust generated from the pulp and paper industry as the raw material. In addition, the physicochemical changes of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin during the reaction process of bamboo sawdust have been studied, and the liquefaction mechanism of bamboo sawdust under the action of various solid acids has been concluded. As a result, the liquefaction efficiency of bamboo sawdust under the polyol system of PEG400/propanetriol is mainly related to the acid strength of the solid acid, and the greater the acid strength of the solid acid, the better the catalytic effect on the bamboo sawdust, in which the residual amount of bamboo sawdust liquefaction catalyzed by the SPA catalyst is only 17.72%. Noteworthy, the most difficult component to liquefy is the crystallization of natural cellulose I into cellulose II during the reaction process, which is the primary obstacle to the complete liquefaction of bamboo sawdust by solid acid. Overall, these findings are valuable for the high value utilization of waste bamboo sawdust in the pulp and paper industry, as well as the application of solid acid catalytic technology for biomass.

RESUMO

Rapid and accurate sequencing of the entire viral genome, coupled with continuous monitoring of genetic changes, is crucial for understanding the epidemiology of coronaviruses. We designed a novel method called micro target hybrid capture system (MT-Capture) to enable whole-genome sequencing in a timely manner. The novel design of probes used in target binding exhibits a unique and synergistic "hand-in-hand" conjugation effect. The entire hybrid capture process is within 2.5 hours, overcoming the time-consuming and complex operation characteristics of the traditional liquid-phase hybrid capture (T-Capture) system. By designing specific probes for these coronaviruses, MT-Capture effectively enriched isolated strains and 112 clinical samples of coronaviruses with cycle threshold values below 37. Compared to multiplex PCR sequencing, it does not require frequent primer updates and has higher compatibility. MT-Capture is highly sensitive and capable of tracking variants.IMPORTANCEMT-Capture is meticulously designed to enable the efficient acquisition of the target genome of the common human coronavirus. Coronavirus is a kind of virus that people are generally susceptible to and is epidemic and infectious, and it is the virus with the longest genome among known RNA viruses. Therefore, common human coronavirus samples are selected to evaluate the accuracy and sensitivity of MT-Capture. This method utilizes innovative probe designs optimized through probe conjugation techniques, greatly shortening the time and simplifying the handwork compared with traditional hybridization capture processes. Our results demonstrate that MT-Capture surpasses multiplex PCR in terms of sensitivity, exhibiting a thousandfold increase. Moreover, MT-Capture excels in the identification of mutation sites. This method not only is used to target the coronaviruses but also may be used to diagnose other diseases, including various infectious diseases, genetic diseases, or tumors.

RESUMO

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an incurable chronic respiratory disease, has become a major public health problem. The relationship between the composition of intestinal microbiota and the important clinical factors affecting COPD remains unclear. This study aimed to identify specific intestinal microbiota with high clinical diagnostic value for COPD. Methods: The fecal microbiota of patients with COPD and healthy individuals were analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Random forest classification was performed to analyze the different intestinal microbiota. Spearman correlation was conducted to analyze the correlation between different intestinal microbiota and clinical characteristics. A microbiota-disease network diagram was constructed using the gut MDisorder database to identify the possible pathogenesis of intestinal microorganisms affecting COPD, screen for potential treatment, and guide future research. Results: No significant difference in biodiversity was shown between the two groups but significant differences in microbial community structure. Fifteen genera of bacteria with large abundance differences were identified, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, Lachnospira, and Parabacteroides. Among them, the relative abundance of Lachnospira and Coprococcus was negatively related to the smoking index and positively related to lung function results. By contrast, the relative abundance of Parabacteroides was positively correlated with the smoking index and negatively correlated with lung function findings. Random forest classification showed that Lachnospira was the genus most capable of distinguishing between patients with COPD and healthy individuals suggesting it may be a potential biomarker of COPD. A Lachnospira disease network diagram suggested that Lachnospira decreased in some diseases, such as asthma, diabetes mellitus, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and increased in other diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, and bovine lichen. Conclusion: The dominant intestinal microbiota with significant differences is related to the clinical characteristics of COPD, and the Lachnospira has the potential value to identify COPD.

RESUMO

Modern atmosphere pressure interface (API) enables high-efficiency coupling between mass analyzers in high vacuum and atmosphere ionization sources such as electrospray ionization (ESI) source. The transient gas flow entering API possesses strong compressibility and turbulent characteristics, which exerts a huge impact on ion transmission. However, the instantaneous nature and vortical morphology of the turbulence in API and its affection in ion transmission were hardly covered in the reported research. Here we conduct a transient turbulent flow-affected ion transmission evaluation for two typical APIs, the ion funnel and the S-lens, based on scale-resolving large eddy simulation and electro-hydrodynamical ion tracing simulation. In our simulation, the transient properties of the gas flow in the two APIs are illustrated and analyzed in-depth. After experimentally validated on a homemade ESI-TOF-MS platform, the results suggest that the ion funnel can achieve a higher droplet desolvation rate by introducing a unique droplet recirculation mechanism. Meanwhile, the less-dispersed gas flow in S-lens is beneficial in actuating ions axially. In conclusion, the application of the scale-resolving turbulence model helps us to understand the complicated fluid-ion interaction mechanism in APIs and is promising in the development of mass spectrometry instruments of higher performance.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sarcandra glabra is officially named Zhong Jie Feng as a traditional medicine. In the nationality of Yao and Zhuang, it has been used to treat digestive diseases like stomachache and dysentery. Similarly, in Dai nationality, it has been used to treat intestinal diseases like gastric ulcers. However, the effect and mechanism of S. glabra on experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) are known. AIM OF STUDY: The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect and mechanism of S. glabra on experimental UC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The chemical components in the water extract of S. glabra (ZJF) were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS method. The HCoEpiC cell line was used to assess the promotive effect on intestinal proliferation and restitution. RAW264.7 cells were used to assess the in vitro anti-inflammatory effect of ZJF. The 3% DSS-induced colitis model was used to evaluate the in vivo effect of ZJF (4.5 g/kg and 9.0 g/kg). Mesalazine (0.5 g/kg) was used as the positive drug. ELISA, RT-qPCR, Western blot, and multiplex immunohistochemical experiments were used to test gene levels in the colon tissue. The H&E staining method was used to monitor the pathological changes of colon tissue. TUNEL assay kit was used to detect apoptosis of epithelial colonic cells. RESULTS: ZJF could alleviate the DSS-caused colitis in colon tissues, showing a comparative effect to that of the positive drug mesalazine. Mechanism study indicated that ZJF could promote normal colonic HCoEpiC cell proliferation and restitution, inhibit overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, restore the M1/M2 ratio, decrease epithelial colonic cell apoptosis, rescue tight junction protein levels, and modulate IL-17/Notch1/FoxP3 pathway to treat experimental UC. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that S. glabra can promote intestinal cell restitution, balance immune response, and modulate IL-17/Notch1/FoxP3 pathway to treat experimental UC.

RESUMO

As the major outer membrane protein (OMP) presents in the Pasteurella multocida envelope, OmpH was frequently expressed for laboratory assessments of its immunogenicity against P. multocida infections, but the results are not good. In this study, we modified OmpH with dendritic cell targeting peptide (Depeps) and/or Salmonella FliCd flagellin, and expressed three types of recombinant proteins with the MBP tag (rDepeps-FliC-OmpH-MBP, rDepeps-OmpH-MBP, rFliC-OmpH-MBP). Assessments in mouse models revealed that vaccination with rDepeps-FliC-OmpH-MBP, rDepeps-OmpH-MBP, or rFliC-OmpH-MBP induced significant higher level of antibodies as well as IFN-γ and IL-4 in murine sera than vaccination with rOmpH-MBP (P < 0.5). Vaccination with the three modified proteins also provided increased protection (rDepeps-FliC-OmpH-MBP, 70 %; rDepeps-OmpH-MBP, 50 %; rFliC-OmpH-MBP, 60 %) against P. multocida serotype D compared to vaccination with rOmpH-MBP (30 %). In mice vaccinated with different types of modified OmpHs, a significantly decreased bacterial strains were recovered from bloods, lungs, and spleens compared to rOmpH-MBP-vaccinated mice (P < 0.5). Notably, our assessments also demonstrated that vaccination with rDepeps-FliC-OmpH-MBP provided good protection against infections caused by a heterogeneous group of P. multocida serotypes (A, B, D). Our above findings indicate that modification with DCpep and Salmonella flagellin could be used as a promising strategy to improve vaccine effectiveness.

RESUMO

Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), an ideal reductant treating persistent pollutants, is hampered by issues like corrosion, passivation, and suboptimal utilization. Recent advancements in nonmetallic modified ZVI (NM-ZVI) show promising potential in circumventing these challenges by modifying ZVI's surface and internal physicochemical properties. Despite its promise, a thorough synthesis of research advancements in this domain remains elusive. Here we review the innovative methodologies, regulatory principles, and reduction-centric mechanisms underpinning NM-ZVI's effectiveness against two prevalent persistent pollutants: halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals. We start by evaluating different nonmetallic modification techniques, such as liquid-phase reduction, mechanical ball milling, and pyrolysis, and their respective advantages. The discussion progresses towards a critical analysis of current strategies and mechanisms used for NM-ZVI to enhance its reactivity, electron selectivity, and electron utilization efficiency. This is achieved by optimizing the elemental compositions, content ratios, lattice constants, hydrophobicity, and conductivity. Furthermore, we propose novel approaches for augmenting NM-ZVI's capability to address complex pollution challenges. This review highlights NM-ZVI's potential as an alternative to remediate water environments contaminated with halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals, contributing to the broader discourse on green remediation technologies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: F-actin is involved in the progression of ischemic stroke and is associated with the disruption of the blood-brain barrier. In this article, we evaluated serum F-actin as a biomarker in stroke severity and early neurological deterioration (END) in acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: In this study, serum F-actin was measured in consecutively collected 140 AIS patients and 144 healthy controls matched in gender and age by ELISA. Early neurological deterioration (END) was defined as the deterioration of neurological dysfunction within 72 hours of admission, with an increase of ≥ 4 points in the NIHSS score. Severe stroke was defined as a NIHSS score>8 at admission. RESULTS: The serum F-actin level in AIS was significantly higher than healthy controls (p = 0.041). In large-artery atherosclerosis stroke and cardioembolic stroke, serum F-actin were significantly higher than that in small artery occlusion stroke (padjust = 0.019, padjust<0.001, respectively).F-actin level above the critical value (>1.37ug/L) was significantly associated with severe stroke (OR, 3.015; 95%CI, 1.014-8.963; p = 0.047) . In addition, elevated level of F-actin was significantly associated with END (OR, 1.323; 95% CI, 1.001-1.747, P = 0.049). When the level of F-actin was above the critical value (>2.17ug/L), its association with END remained significant (OR, 6.303; 95%CI, 2.160-18.394; p<0.001) . CONCLUSION: F-actin is an important blood biomarker in the early stage of AIS, and high levels of F-actin are valuable in determining the severity of stroke and predicting early neurological deterioration.

RESUMO

Four compounds (1-4) featuring with an L-rhodinose and spiroketal, possess uncommon continuous hydroxy groups in the macrolide skeleton, and a dichloro-diketopiperazine (5) were isolated from a marine derived Micromonospora sp. FIMYZ51. The determination of the relative and absolute configurations of all isolates was achieved by extensive spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and ECD calculations. According to structural characteristic and genomic sequences, a plausible biosynthetic pathway for compound 1-4 was proposed and a spirocyclase was inferred to be responsible for the formation of the rare spirocyclic moiety. Compounds 1-4 exhibited potent antifungal activities which is equal to itraconazole against Aspergillus niger. Compounds 1-5 exhibited different degree of inhibitory activities against opportunistic pathogenic bacteria of endocarditis (Micrococcus luteus) with MIC values ranging from 0.0625 µg/mL to 32 µg/mL. Compounds 2 and 3 showed moderate cytotoxicity against drug-resistant tumor cell lines (Namalwa and U266). The result not only provides active lead-compounds, but also reveal the potential of the spirocyclase gene resources from Micromonospora sp., which highlights the promising potential of the strain for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Natural Antisense Transcripts (NATs) are a kind of complex regulatory RNAs that play crucial roles in gene expression and regulation. However, the NATs in Cannabis Sativa L., a widely economic and medicinal plant rich in cannabinoids remain unknown. In this study, we comprehensively predicted C. sativa NATs genome-wide using strand-specific RNA sequencing (ssRNA-Seq) data, and validated the expression profiles by strand-specific quantitative reverse transcription PCR (ssRT-qPCR). Consequently, a total of 307 NATs were predicted in C. sativa, including 104 cis- and 203 trans- NATs. Functional enrichment analysis demonstrated the potential involvement of the C. sativa NATs in DNA polymerase activity, RNA-DNA hybrid ribonuclease activity, and nucleic acid binding. Finally, 18 cis- and 376 trans- NAT-ST pairs were predicted to produce 621 cis- and 5,679 trans- small interfering RNA (nat-siRNAs), respectively. These nat-siRNAs were potentially involved in the biosynthesis of cannabinoids and cellulose. All these results will shed light on the regulation of NATs and nat-siRNAs in C. sativa.

RESUMO

Soil is the basis of agricultural production and accessing accurate information on soil nutrients is essential. Traditional methods of soil composition detection, which are based on chemical analysis, are characterized by being costly and polluting. Spectroscopic analysis has proven to be a rapid, non-destructive and effective technique for predicting soil properties in general and potassium, phosphorus and organic matter in particular. However, previous research on soils has rarely combined optimization algorithms with machine learning techniques, which has led to suboptimal model accuracy and convergence speed. In this study, a total of 184 soil samples were collected from three cities of Linhai, Yueqing and Longyou County, Zhejiang Province, China. After measuring pH values, alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen (SAN), available phosphorus (SAP), available potassium (SAK) and soil organic matter (SOM) contents, along with their corresponding spectroscopic measurements, nine pretreatment methods and their combinations are adopted. A novel assessment model, integrating support vector machine and dung beetle optimization algorithm (DBO-SVR), is proposed to predict pH values and SAN, SAP, SAK, SOM content. Meanwhile, the DBO algorithm is compared with three mainstream optimization algorithms (particle swarm optimization (PSO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and grey wolf optimizer (GWO)). Results showed that the DBO-SVR model was shown best performance with Rp, RMSEP and RPD of 0.9842, 0.1306, 5.6485 respectively for prediction of pH value, with Rp, RMSEP and RPD of 0.8802, 15.0574 mg/kg and 2.0508, respectively for assessment of SAN content, with Rp, RMSEP and RPD of 0.9790, 12.8298 mg/kg, and 4.5132, respectively for assessment of SAP content, with Rp, RMSEP and RPD of 0.8677, 22.5107 mg/kg, and 1.9546, respectively for assessment of SAK content, and with Rp, RMSEP and RPD of 0.9273, 2.6427g/kg , and 2.1821, respectively for assessment of SOM content. This study demonstrates that the combination of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and the DBO-SVR algorithm is capable of predicting soil nutrient composition with greater accuracy and efficiency.

RESUMO

Background/Aims: : This study aimed to analyze the trends in mortality attributed to hepatitis B and C around the Western Pacific region from 1990 to 2019. Methods: : We used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study for a systematic analysis. The deaths related to hepatitis B and C were analyzed by age, sex, year, risk factors, geographical location, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Results: : From 1990 to 2019, the annual total deaths from hepatitis B decreased from 0.266 to 0.210 million and those from hepatitis C increased from 0.119 to 0.142 million in the Western Pacific region. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of hepatitis B and C decreased by 63.5% and 48.0%, respectively. The declines in the ASMR related to hepatitis B and C were only detected in 12 and two Western Pacific countries, respectively. As the major risk factors, the contribution of alcohol use to hepatitis B deaths was 52% and drug use to hepatitis C was 80%. In males and females, the ASMR attributed to hepatitis B decreased by 61% and 71%, respectively, and the ASMR attributed to hepatitis C decreased by 43% and 55%, respectively. The association between SDI and ASMRs suggested that hepatitis B and C, respectively, showed an overall decline and stable trends as the SDI improved in the Western Pacific region. Conclusions: : Although the mortality rate from hepatitis B and C decreased from 1990 to 2019, notable variation was observed among 27 Western Pacific countries. Efforts targeting hepatitis B and C prevention and treatment are still required in this region, especially for the pandemic countries.
